Wendy Yu, 2019

With October just beginning, Somerville High School is preparing to say goodbye to cherished science teacher Ms. Caldeira.

This is Caldeira’s thirtieth year at SHS, and during her time here she has taught both in the language department and, mainly, in the science department teaching biology and human physiology and anatomy.

Discussing her human anatomy class, her favorite subject to teach, Caldeira expressed her hope for “students learn about their body and to use that information [in their lives].”  She also found enjoyment as the advisor for both the National Honors Society and Best Buddies club.

Throughout her years here, Caldeira has had many rewarding experiences, but mainly “….the impact that [she has] on students’ successions and how they open new doors.”

With good times often come hard times.“You never know when anything is going to happen with the school, the administration…  you have to adapt to it,” said Caldeira when speaking of the everyday challenges that come with a teaching career.

Caldeira has witnessed many changes within the school during her 29 years as a member of the SHS community, citing the alterations in teaching and learning due to technology-reliant classes.

With the introduction of more technology into the school system, she has sometimes found it difficult to adapt to the changes it has produced.

This Friday, October 6th, will be Caldeira’s last day teaching here at SHS. After retiring, she plans on traveling more, volunteering, and possibly even getting a part-time job while experiencing a new phase in life. Though she will miss her students the most when she leaves, Caldeira won’t miss having to teach by the bell, which has always interfered with her lessons.

“Learn as much as you can while you’re in high school,” advises Caldeira to the students of SHS.

Thank you, Ms. Caldeira, for enriching us with all of your hard work these many years! We will miss you here at Somerville High School!
